Descriptions of a positive and a negative learning experience that you have had in the practice teaching

Dear FLE 404 members,
In this assignment, you need to describe a positive learning experience and a negative one during your practice teaching period that you think have played a significant role in your professional and personal development during your practice teaching by providing details and examples. You need to illustrate what you learnt from these experiences, in what ways these experiences are significant and critical in your professional and personal development and in what ways they contributed to you, in what ways you think these experiences have affected your teacher identity.

  1. The positive one is the one that I talked about in the post above. The negative one was with tenth grades again but with a different class. They were very reluctant to speak and to participate and I was the only one speaking. This is the worst situation a teacher can ever have. I kept talking and be positive and be encouraging for them and this helped me a bit I see that we should be patient all the time as a teacher. Also we need to be good modifier of activities that can modify the activities according to students motivation and age immediately. I believe that I will gain this ability as I get experience.

  2. The positive experience of mine was to see my students’ happiness on their face when they got the positive feedback after answering anything because to enable them to gain their self-confidence was much more important than taking a correct answer all the time, so when I saw that my dream came into life, I was really happy with my teaching experiences. The negative one was that in one of my lessons, a student always said “I don’t understand” during the lesson although I made an effort to tell him what he did not understood, so it was very discouraging for me. However, after this experience, I learnt from his class-teacher that he always asks unrelated questions about the lesson and says he does not understand anything.

  4. Unfortunately, this term I didn’t have many good teaching experiences. So I will start with the negative one, it was my first experience in this term. I would teach will/going to. I gave students a reading text which includes a dialog including various examples of will/going to. Then I tried to have students infer the usages of will/going to. However, (most probably since they are not used to this technique) they couldn’t make any inferences. I was really disappointed. From this experience, I learned that sometimes inductive teaching may not work and sometimes students need more guided learning activities. When it comes to the positive one, it was my third teaching. Firstly I made them listen to a song to go over the previously learned material and then I gave them a reading to introduce the new topic. Then I attract their attention to the new topic. This experience was much better, especially the song part. They really enjoyed it and although they didn’t understand most of the song they didn’t quit. They continued to try. I think, it is mostly the song that made them so interested. Therefore, after this experience, I decided to use songs and videos more because they are more effective in assuring students’ participation.

  5. I want to begin with the positive one. The topic of the lesson was “technological gadgets”. It was a reading text from the students’ course book. In the pre-reading stage, I showed students the pictures of small gadgets and asked them to guess their functions. Then we read the passage and went on with the other activities. The topic was interesting for the students because they are much into technology. Most of the students made good guesses. They participated in the lesson very well. I enjoyed teaching that topic.
I taught the same topic in a different class. It was a negative learning experience for me. Students were reluctant to talk. They didn’t want to do the exercises. There was a lot of noise in the class. I think the reason was the time of the lesson. It was a “Friday afternoon” in which students are deadly tired. The only thing they wanted to do is to leave the school and go home. It was a really bad experience for me.

  6. As for the positive teaching experience, I do not have a specific one. All in all, I did not encounter any major problems in my teachings. I had a good relationship with my students. I have gained an inexpressible experience through this apprenticeship. I can say that I will never forget the moment when the students called me ‘hocam’ in the lesson for the first time. I felt like the happiest person in the world at that moment. When it comes to the negative teaching experience, it was actually when one of the students told me in the middle of the lesson that I always chose the same students to do the activities in the lesson. I was really upset by this fact and I tried to be more careful about this issue in my other teachings.

  7. In my second teaching task, there was a reading passage about a memoryman and there were a lot of comprehension questions about the passage. Since I thought that it was too boring I adopted my lesson plan according to my students and added some memory games and videos about that man.I and students enjoyed every second of the lesson.I really realized how important adopting a lesson plan by taking students' needs and interests into the consideration is. As a bad experience, in my fourth teaching I made students work in groups but it was difficult to manage the class during th etask. I realized the importance of having googd managing skills and that I need to develop myself in classroom management.

  8. 2. Generally I had a good time with the students. My positive experience was to see my students in a mode of enthusiasm and motivated. Also students always wanted us to teach them. The fact that they asked me what they had not understood when they had been unclear about the issue made me happy because it showed that they were with me and were in the learning process mentally. Moreover, seeing their satisfaction when they got positive motivation from me was elating for me. As for my negative experience, there was a hyperactive child and he could disturb his friends and sometimes walked around the classroom. This case could also disturb me and it was so distractive. However, I have learned that he was a special boy and he needed to busy with something in the class.

  10. Hi everybody,
I think that both my best and the worst teachings was the first teaching of this semester. In that lesson I thought the grammar topic “could/couldn’t, can, cannot” It was the first grammar teaching that I have ever done and it was quite successful. However, it was also the time when I did most of the mistakes. First of all, I prepared really intense lesson plan for the students. In order to keep up with the lesson plan I had to hurry up in the lesson and that made students stresses and they got really tired after the lesson. My mentor teacher advised me not to prepare some many activities for 2 hours lesson. The primary level students need a slower lesson in order to be able to internalize what they’ve learnt.

  11. according to me it is not bad,but my nentor teacher told me that ı had some problems with my first teaching. students' reactions also showed that she was right. in my first teaching, ı did speaking and listening. firstly ı gave information about the music band Beatles by ppt and then ı played one of their songs which included the grammar point to the taught 'future tense' then we talked about the message to be given in the song and we talked about their life related to that topic. the students were all participative and they seemed to enjoyed the lesson. then in her feedback my mentor teacher told me that it was not a full lesson. ı was supposed to give grammar point in every lesson otherwise students would think that they learned nothing. ı got shocked with her comment. however some students went near her and asked 'what we learnt in this lesson' after my lesson. at that time ı realized that students were just used to learn grammar and when they do listening or speaking they just see it as a leisure time activity. my most successful lessons were those that ı used group work. in my two teachings ı used group work and they were all succesful. students were young adults and their age level was suitable for group work. ı also used gropu work as a competition. students were all motivated and they were all participative, ı was successful to give the point through this way.

  12. I want to begin with the pozitive one. As my students knew me and my teaching style much better after 3 months, I was very happy to see that they were listening to me with full attention and waiting for my activities which attracted them to partipate in the sessions. This gave me a full confidence and happiness that I started to deserve the title "teacher". However, I had bad and negative memories of internship, though. I had difficulties in understanding what kinf of a teaching style and philosophy my mentor teacher has. She prepared no activity at all througout the whole term. A book, a teacher and students. Literally, she made decrease students' interest in ENglish for sure. Thinking that those students aren't willing to learn any English, I find all responsibility of this in teacher's attitudes towards her students and in her teaching style.

  13. I am happy with most of the teaching experience I have had throughout the semester. Hopefully, I didn't face any big problems. My students liked the lessons and participated in the lessons. However, I had a negative teaching experience in one of my teachings. It was my fourth teaching task. There weren't many students in the lesson, because the students were outside the school because of a festival. The students didn't want me to teach in the classoom, and they wanted to have some free time. However, I insisted on teaching in the lesson. The students participated in the lesson, but they were unmotivated at times. I wish I hadn't taught in that lesson. If I hadn't taught in that lesson, the students wouldn't have been bored, and they would have learned more in the lesson.

  14. There are a lot to write here as negative experience, unfortubately. I have difficulty in choosing which one to tell you all. Being a teacher of a class doesn’t simply means teaching only. If you are a teacher of a class, you are also there to help and take care of the students. The teacher is not only a machine programmed to teach only and nothing else. Here, we see a really bad example of what shouldn’t be. Fırat has a very bad hurt, which is crystal clear in his face. However, Mahinur teacher ignores and hurries up to start the lesson. Lesson for what and whom? It is very probable that there is one student left behind during the lesson, which is Fırat. Trust and feel of being cared are very important factors in student-teacher relationship. However, these factors are violated in this case. Therefore, Fırat doesn’t see his teacher as a very good help and source of safe. This type of teacher ignorance is very important to not only Fırat but the other students. Mahinur teacher’s way of manner gives the same message to the students all: “She is not there to care but to teach”, which is not a desired image for a real teacher. As for my perspective as a prospective English teacher, I experienced and saw the reality of what we had learned so far in EFL classes for the second time. As a teacher, I have to keep my emotions and not them let go away while entering the classroom. I must be sure that my student mentally and physically in my class. One of these criteria is not enough. If there is such a problematic case about my student’s health, nothing is more important than him. I must do something for him to get back to his wellness, not to my lesson only. As for the positive one, it was the time that we did our last task there.

  15. I haven't had a negative experience on learning, but many positive ones. However, the most significant one was that I gained many kids and friends. I have learnt that I need to understand my student and don't forget that I was one of them. Therefore, I tried to remember my expectations when I was a student. I didn't bother them and tried to keep their attention and motivation at max as much as I can.

  16. Hello!
There are countless examples for me about positive learning experiences. I have learned to be a teacher and a student at the same time. I have learned to be a teacher to my students as a guide, a facilitator and sometimes as an instructor. I have learned to use the time effectively, to communicate with the students and to be a teacher in all terms. In my school experience, I not only practiced what I learned in the college, but also learned how to work with other teachers, in our case with my classmates Bilge and Sezgi, to make the teaching smooth and apply our courses cooperatively.
As for the negative one, I can say that a teacher should learn to be patient and student-friendly while not losing the control of the classroom. Sometimes the students cannot concentrate on the lesson due to the season, due to another course or exam. In such times, a teacher should know how to attract the Ss attention and balance the needs of the students with the requirements of the course.
