Your strengths and weak points as a prospective English teacher

Dear FLE 404 members,
In this assignment, you need to critically analyze, describe and illustrate your strengths and weak points as a prospective English teacher. You need to give examples from your practice teaching experiences to illustrate the points that you make. You also need to illustrate what you are planning to do to improve your weak points as an English teacher.

  1. I am confident and this helps me a lot. I believe that I know what to do while teaching but sometimes as I am very serious while teaching this may make the students scared and get tensed but I try to keep smiling. I am patient but sometimes I can easily get distracted and get angry when I see someone talking. I can use harsh warnings. I believe that I can overcome these problems when I underline my personality at the beginning of the semester at first meeting. This will be like signing a treaty:)

  2. I am a patient teacher who doesn’t get angry easily. I see it as one of my strengths because I know that students will try our limits especially in the first years of our teaching experience. It doesn’t mean that I will ignore all the misbehaviors or accept everything that students say of course. No matter how much I am angry, I try not to break one’s heart.
The tone of my voice is not loud, which causes problems from time to time. Sometimes I have to shout in order to make myself heard by all the students. I hate shouting, so I usually wander around the class to help students at the back row hear me 

  3. As I mention before, I try to be patient all the time and I am very friendly towards the students, so these two characteristics help me to get on well with the students generally, but sometimes I can be angry when they give no answer, at least they make no effort, so it may be discouraging for them. I have to try to be calm in such situations because I may lose some of the students who are very fragile.

  5. I think one of my strengths as a prospective teacher is that I usually don’t overreact in unexpected situations or don’t get angry easily. This will be helpful in my job, I think. I usually have a positive attitude. I like being positive. I am able to show people that I have a friendly attitude towards them. These will help me create a positive atmosphere in the classroom, I think.
My weak point is about classroom management. I didn’t have problems about this issue during practice teaching, because the students didn’t usually misbehave during the lessons. However, if they had done such a thing, I know that I wasn’t prepared to deal with it. It is a point I don’t feel confident about. I think one way to improve my classroom management skills can be thinking about the issue and preparing a plan to apply to before I start teaching my own class. I need to have some personal strategies to prevent misbehaviors, and to deal with them when they happen.

  6. I think that I am a patient and caring teacher. I believe that each student is an individual and unique, so I try to address each of them individually. I have effective communication skills and I am friendly towards the students. However, I sometimes become angry and I cannot deal with it. It just happens when a student does not understand a point clearly, but it sometimes happens.

  8. I think that I am a humanistic teacher. I can establish good relations with my students and I can relate to their needs and interests. I can deal with the unexpected problems that occur in the lesson practically. Moreover, I like updating myself and I believe that this will help me throughout my teaching career. As for my negative aspects, I sometimes can not stand the noise in the class especially in group activities and I lose my patience.

  9. I think thanks to teaching tasks I did during this semester and last semester, I developed myself in preparing effective lesson plans and adopting them according to students' needs and interests. Preparing a lesson plan was really difficult for me and it would take so much time that I would lose my enthusiasm. However, now I don't have any difficulty in preparing lesson plans since I have more information about the preferences of the students now. On the other hand, I think I am not competent enough in classroom management. I had sometimes difficulty in handling everything happening in the classroom. But I think this is something that will develop through experience. I can say that as a prospective English teacher I need to develop myself in classroom management.

  10. My strongest point in teaching is that I give great importance to students’ feelings. When I realized that they don’t want to do something, I don’t force them to do it. However, sometimes this can cause problems. For instance, when they don’t want to answer a question I don’t insist on, but they can interpret this as whenever they want something, I will accept it. My weak point is that most of the time I am over nervous and students understand my feelings and this is not a good thing for a teacher. Also sometimes I have problems in classroom management especially in group work the students can be really nasty, but since I don’t want to hurt them I don’t treat them in a serious or harsh way. However, mostly they don’t understand my intention and they go on doing it. To get away such problems first of all I am planning to be confident and make students feel that I am the authority. Although I won’t hurt their feelings, they should know that they have to obey the rules. In order to avoid classroom management problems, I will make these clear at the beginning of the term and I will be consistent in applying my rules. I think this will help me a lot.

  11. I think I am a helping and smiling teacher that encourages my students’ participation and motivation in the classroom. Also, I have developed preparing lesson plan and that is helpful for me to teach in an organized and effective way. Since I care about students’ needs and interests the lessons get more effective and motivating for the students. However, as for my weakness, I have difficulties in dealing with misbehaviors in the classroom. I try to ignore them or set the eye contact with students misbehaving in the class.

  12. I am a reflective teacher. I try to apply research in my classrooms. This is my strongest point and I am motivated to teach when I enjoy myslef. That is why I do care a lot for interestinf and fun classes. My weakest point is closely linked to my personality. I am not good at with distruptive behaviours. Even though I absolutely favor warning students during breaks over in the class hours. Threatening is not for me by any means but sometimes when talkative students happened to me, I may get confused with the appropriate thing to do at that moment.

  13. I think I will be a friendly teacher and I will have good relationships with my students. Secondly I will be open to criticism so that I can improve myself. I also think that I am knowledgeable enough in my own field. As for the negative sides, I can easily get angry if my students insist on disruptive behaviors. In such a case I can be a little bit frustrated and this may affect the communication between me and my students.

  14. I am self confident. ı am not very anxious during my teachings. ı am very friednly and ı can create friendly and positive atmosphere and students feel free to speak. ı can easily deal with their questions. ı like teaching and ı can both motivate myself and my students. my weak points are that ı don't use my body language often. ı don't use my tone of voice effectively sometimes. sometimes ı am too interested in one student and forget the rest of the class and so lose the control of the classroom. ı have some minor difficulties about classroom management.

  15. I want to begin with my weak points. In my teachings I saw that ı need a strict time managament first of all. As ı am a person who can turn into a angry person easily, I have to be very careful in class environment honestly. For about my pozitive points, I am self confident and have good relationships with students. I am good at preparing creative and fun acitivities. Also, I think I have no problem in classroom management.

  16. I am a friendly teacher, and I don't have problems with understanding the students although they are much younger than me. I am a calm and a patient person, so I don't get angry easily. When there is a classroom management problem, I can stay calm and figure out what the problem is. It really helps me understand the motives behind the events. I am also a good observer, and I can detect the problems easily. When it comes to my weak points, I can't speak loudly, and it may causes some problems for me. Another weak point of mine is that I spend too much time preparing for a lesson at times. If I don't limit this time, I may spend most of my time dealing with school work.

  17. Hello!
I believe I am a very positive and encouraging teacher. I always smile during the classes and try to be friend with each of the student in the classroom (not only in class but also in the break times by asking questions about their interests). I try to be as clear as possible about my expectations from the students and give enough time for each of the activities conducted during the class hour. By this way, the students do not feel unnecessary anxiety and be more planned about their studies.
As for the negative aspects, like most of my friends, I can get furious when I realize that they do not answer me since they do not pay enough attention or put enough effort during the classes. In such times, I try to be calm and try to attract their attention again to go on the lesson.
