A video on an effective English class

Dear FLE 404 members,
In this assignment, you need to find a video from YouTube,or TeacherTube on an effective English class from your own perspective. You need to illustrate and justify your points by giving examples. You need to focus on the following points:
a)In what ways do you think it is an effective English class?
b)In what ways do you find the teacher's teaching style, methods and techniques,his/her interaction with students effective?

You also need to illustrate the weak points of the teacher and the ineffective aspects of the lesson. You need to give the link to the video as well.

In this video we see an English reading class. In the video students read the reading passage aloud. The teacher asks questions about the text and encourages students to speak in the class. It is useful I think, because students need to overcome their anxiety to become good language learners. In the video, we do not see what the teacher has done in the warm-up. If the teacher didn't do anything before reading the passage, it wouldn't be fruitful as the students didn't know much about the subject. On the other hand, I find the comprehension questions fruitful. They focus on meaning and shows if the students understand the text. In general there is a top-down approach, which focuses on meaning and tries to fit the input to our already existing schema. I think, before reading the passage aloud the students should read the text silently, which contributes students to learn faster.

In this video, teacher tells a story to the student in company with relaxing music. Students listen to the teacher in absolutely comfortable atmosphere. The teacher tells them to take deep breath and think that this morning is very beautiful before beginning to tell the story. In this way, they can be included in the lesson without having any stress .Moreover , while telling the story , teacher, at the same time, acts it in order that students understand better by visualizing. In this method, music helps long term memorization, games and activities also help memorizing and the learning stress disappears thanks to alternating phases of relaxation and activities. On the other hand, the teacher’s approach to the students is also appreciable. She is very supportive and tolerant to their mistakes. However, this method has some disadvantages although I like some parts of it. When we look at the course in detail, there is almost no interaction among students or little interaction and they are so passive because of being exposed to teacher-centered lesson type. Furthermore, sometimes repetitions and group readings can be boring for students and they limit the time for other activities. Unlike the communicative approach, teacher is talkative and the students are not in the role of the communicators. Then, they don’t create any meaning by their own and the order of the lesson doesn’t allow the students to enhance their communicative competence.
Consequently, this method is not in line with the principles of communicative teaching in many ways despite its some useful parts.

This is an example of using a very well known game to teach action words. Firstly the teacher makes sure that everybody knows the game “charades” because he will have them play it to learn some action words. I really like the idea of learning through a very well known game. In addition, the teacher has a smiling face with a positive attitude towards students. This feature of him increases students’ motivation and prevent them to be afraid of learning. Besides, he has a good interaction with students and so the students seem so relaxed and they learn without any difficulty. I appreciate his ability to create a stress free atmosphere. I also like the teacher’s giving importance to students’ forming full sentences. At the beginning, he warns them to speak in full sentences instead of shouting out the single words. And also he pays special attention to students’ pronunciation, when a student makes a mistake he corrects it immediately without any negative comment on the mistake. Besides, he gives immediate feedback and reinforcement, which is a very good side of his teaching. Furthermore, at the end he gives some more creative ideas to teach grammar which are effective techniques especially for kinesthetic learners. I also saw some weak points in the video. For instance, the words seem very easy for students. He should add some challenge for students. Another point is that there are so few students in the class; I don’t know what to do in a more crowded class. I think it can be a challenge to use this technique in a crowded class.

The lesson begins in the third minute. It is a grammar lesson in which the teacher gives the Past Simple Tense in a context. In the beginning, he asks the students whether they watched a movie. Then he asks them to tell the story the movie using the past simple tense. Next, he shows some dates related to his life and wants students to guess what happened on that day. After eliciting answers, he explains what happened on that day. Then, he distributes four cards and a pen each and asks them to write a date on one side of the card and the event happened on that day on the other side of the card. Later on, he asks them to work in pairs and ask each other what happened on that day. Students talk about those dates in pairs. Then the teacher asks questions to students like “What happened to your pair? What did she do on that day?” Students tell what their pairs did on that day using the Past Simple Tense and the lesson ends.
This video is a good example of an effective lesson because students are active during the teaching/learning process. Speaking and writing is integrated. The grammar point is given in a meaningful context. Students talk about the important dates in their life and in their pair’s life, as well. Students internalize the topic because they talk about their own lives. A meaningful context is always needed no matter which topic or which skill we are teaching in order to facilitate learning.

In this short video a teacher teaches some basic words to the young learners who are two old years. I think the video does not begin from the beginning of the class, so we do not see the warm-up session. The teacher shows flash cards and asks them what it is. Students answer their teacher collectively. Teacher gives encouraging feedbacks to students’ answers. However, for example, when the teacher shows a picture of ear and asks students what it is, a girl shows also her own ear. So, the teacher could have asked students to show their own ear, hair or etc since those students are very young and energetic. On the other hand, that the teacher wants students to perform what goats do is effective way to motivate into the lesson. But, some of the students cannot see that the teacher shows flash cards and so their attention is distracted. In that case it would be better if the teacher was sure whether all the students saw the picture. Apart from those students are so cute and the teacher is smiling.

In this video, a man called James explains the differences between four words, say- tell- listen- hear. This is an effective lesson in my opinion since he explains all of them respectively. I like this lesson because it is not boring and thought- provoking. It is not possible to get distracted easily while listening to him. He uses contextualazed vocabulary teaching along with some other strategies- drawings and charts. Even though I had gotten confused with these words from time to time, I never had that confusion again after I watched this video. That is to say, it really involves you without any interaction.

In this video, the teacher orgineze a competition. She divides the students into two groups and writes many adjectives on the board. She askes the students to write the adjectives under the right columns. The columns are more and -er. She gives a chocalate for the winner group. This lesson is effective because although comparative is a topic in which students can easily get bored when the teacher categorizes the adjectives vy herself. Since the students do it in an enjoyable way, they didn't bored. They also saw many different phrases and words and learned them in a very short time. She also made the students use the words in the sentences to enable them to comprehend the structures. Her communication with the students was also very effective and she created very positive atmosphere in the class. However, while checking whether the students wrote in the right column on the board or not one by one, students may get bored. Instead of cheking them one by one she can directly ask whether there is any word that is not right according to the student and focus on those ones.

In this video, teacher tries to teach her students who are young learners how to response to yes/no questions in present simple tense by using a song about fruits and vegetables. This class is effective for young learners, I think because the setting and environment are really appropriate for this aged children. Moreover, using song is a perfect idea for them not just learn but also acquire this structure since songs are sticky for young learners. Use of objects for meaning is another important point for the teaching. The teacher is doing her job greatly by showing the fruit objects when they are told in the song. I think all of them help students both learn new vocabulary items and build responses to yes/no questions.

    Hello again!

In this video, we see an English teacher trying to teach her students phonic sounds which is very important for suitable pronunciation, reading and vocabulary learning. She uses a board on which some vowels and letters are placed. By reading them one by one, she models her students. She addresses both students’ visual and musical intelligences. Since her students are young learners and physically very active in the classroom, she channels their energies into the lesson by calling them to the board and make them put the sounds together. Moreover, by this way she fosters the interaction between her and her students.
